Advice how to test and fix pool pump yourself

How can I test if my pool pump is working?

  • This can be identified by looking at the pump lid which is normally clear so you can easily check yourself if the flow is looking good
  • If your pump is running and the water in the pump is looking clear and pump basket is full then you should generally have a good flow
  • When you see choppy, bubbly or a low water level in the pump basket this may be a sign that you have an air leak or some restriction in the filtration line. In that case you may need to do some extra steps and check the following :
  • Skimmer and pump baskets are clean
  • Your pump lid is tight and not sucking air
  • Your sand/glass filter is backwashed, or cartridge filter has clean element
  • All valves in filtration line are in correct positions
  • Your pump doesn’t make any unusual noises and is not leaking
  • pool pump not working

    Can't find the right advice?

    Frequent questions about pool equipment:

Can a pool pump or chlorinator be fixed?

Yes, in many cases pool pump and chlorinator can be fixed and repair cost will be significantly lower than buying a new pool equipment, however in some cases repair costs for parts, labour and call out fees make fixing your pool pump, chlorinator or pool filter simply too expensive and the you can consider replacing it with a new one.

Is it worth repairing a pool pump or a chlorinator?

Very often good quality pool equipment repairs are cost-effective and equipment will last for many years. There are several important factors to consider before spending your money on pool equipment repairs such as full repair costs, the overall condition of the equipment, age and whether a repair will extend its lifespan. We normally don't recommend to proceed with repair if the total costs are more than 50% of the price of a new one as a new product will come with the full manufacturer's warranty for the entire product which is normally 2-4 years depending on the product.

Is it better simply to replace my faulty pool equipment with the same brand and model unit?

Very often it can be a good solution especially as it should not require any changes to your your pool plumbing, however its is important to consider if you were happy with the performance of your pool equipment, if it was the best size and capacity for your pool, how long it lasted for you.
