How to choose the best pool pump for your swimming pool in Gold Coast and Brisbane?

There are a few important factors to consider when choosing the best pool filter pump for your swimming pool including the size of your pool, distance between the pool skimmer and pool equipment, your existing filtration equipment, energy consumption, acceptable noise levels and your budget.

Pool pump flow rate and horse power (hp)

It is important to select the pump with correct horse power and flow rate in order to ensure proper water turnover. Correct flow rate is also essential to ensure efficient backwash if you have sand or glass media filter. Most pool filter pumps installed on small or average residential pools up to ~75k litres volume with standard cartridge filter or sand/glass media filter in Gold Coast and Brisbane are normally between 1-1.5 horse power (hp), large residential pool or commercial pools may need 2 hp pool pumps or even more. The most popular pool pump sizes available in the market are 1 hp, 1.25 hp, 1.5 hp and 2 hp . In most cases pools up to ~60k litres volume with 24-25 inch sand/glass filter and up to~10m distance from the pool pump to the pool skimmer and at similar levels works very well with 1 hp or 1.25 hp pool pumps. There are also some pools with the same 1hp and 1.25hp pumps working well with 28inch sand/glass filter, however with larger than standard 24-25 inch media filter we normally recommend 1.25 hp or 1.5hp pumps. Larger residential or commercial pools with 32 inch or larger sand/glass media filters will often need 2 hp pool pump or even higher horsepower pump.

Energy efficient (variable speed) or single speed pool pumps?

Energy efficient pool pumps have some key advantages over traditional single speed pool pump, but is going with variable speed pool pump always the better option than single speed pump? We normally recommend energy efficient pumps for small or average size pool which don’t require the pool pump to run full speed all the running time to achieve good water turnover and ensure proper flow. So 1hp energy efficient pool pump will be great choice for most residential pools up to ~60k litres with cartridge filter or 24inch (in some cases 28inch) or smaller sand/glass media filters. Also energy efficient pumps on lower speeds RPM (rotation per minute) are very quiet and this is a great option solution if you have home office room or bedroom next to the pool equipment. Finally, probably one of the key benefits that energy efficient pump running on lower than maximum speed will reduce energy costs to run your pool. So in most cases pool owners with small or average size pools in Brisbane and Gold Coast will love their energy efficient pumps and benefits it can offer in comparison to single speed pool pumps. On the other hand, one of the examples when pool owner won’t make the most of having energy efficient pump is when they run a pool pump on maximum (high) speed all of the time. This may happen with big pools if the pool volume requires pool pump to run full power all of the time to ensure sufficient water turnover or good flow due to long distance and height between pump and the pool skimmer can be achieve only on high speed. In those cases energy efficient pump will use similar energy as standard single speed pool pump and we recommend customers to save their money and get a single speed pool pump. Alternatively, larger pools would need more powerfull energy efficient pumps to make sure that sand/glass media filter will have sufficient flow for decent backwash and pool meets water turnover needs even when pump runs on lower speeds.

Do energy efficient pool pumps cost more than single speed pumps?

The short answer is YES. In most cases you will pay between 50-100% more if you decide to buy energy efficient pump. So if good brands of single speed 1 hp pool pumps cost in the range of ~$700-950, most energy efficient pumps from the same manufacturer cost betweeen $1200-1600. However, if you run your energy efficient pump on lower speeds your energy savings can potentially cover difference in price in 1 or 2 years.

Do energy efficient pool pumps last more years than pumps with single speed motor?

This question won’t have an exact asnwer we seen both single speed pumps and energy efficient pumps installed more than 10 years ago and running without any issues. At the same time we have seen both types of pool pumps failing within the first year of their operation. If you want a pool pump which will last for many years you have to choose one the better brands, ensure that your pool filtration system is sound and well maintained and ideally cover your pump from direct sun.

Does repairs and service of energy efficient pool pump cost more than single speed pool pump?

The main difference between energy efficient pool pumps and single speed pool pumps is the design of their motors, whereas the wet end, impeller, diffuser, mechanical seal, o’rings and other parts are basically the same. Therefore, if your pool pump motor works fine and you need to service only the hydrolic part of the pool pump such as replacement of mechanical seal or o’rings there shouldn’t be any difference in costs regardless if it is energy efficient or single speed pool pump. When it comes to service and repairs of the pump motor there can be huge difference between single speed and variable speed motor. One of the most common pump motor repairs is replacement of noisy bearing and this is a relatively easy job on most single speed pump motor and some better quality serviceable variable speed motors. However, there are many energy efficient pump models which have not serviceable motors and so repair costs can be significantly higher and pool owners often choose simply to replace the whole pump.
