Advice how to test and fix pool chlorinator yourself

How can I test if my pool chlorinator is working?

  • Simply test your water balance (or get it tested in the local poolshop) and if it shows low chlorine or you have any doubts about its performance proceed with other steps:
  • Check that the salt level in your pool is within the range required by chlorinator manufacturer
  • While your filtration system is running check if the cell (electrode) housing is full of water and if the power pack (the controller hanging on the wall) doesn’t show any error messages
  • Check if chlorine production lights or output monitor needle shows that chlorine is being produced
  • If it is still does not show any production try to increase chlorine production by turning dial up or if your controller is digital press required buttons to increase production
  • If you cannot see any changes on the display of the controller inspect your cell (the electrode) for any signs of calcium build-up. If you see calcification please refer to your chlorinator user's manual for the cell cleaning steps and requirements
  • Test your filtration system with the clean cell to see if that restored chlorine production. If this doesn’t help, there might be an issue with the power pack or your cell is worn and requires replacement

    Frequent questions about pool equipment:

Can a pool pump or chlorinator be fixed?

Yes, in many cases pool pump and chlorinator can be fixed and repair cost will be significantly lower than buying a new pool equipment, however in some cases repair costs for parts, labour and call out fees make fixing your pool pump, chlorinator or pool filter simply too expensive and the you can consider replacing it with a new one.

Is it worth repairing a pool pump or a chlorinator?

Very often good quality pool equipment repairs are cost-effective and equipment will last for many years. There are several important factors to consider before spending your money on pool equipment repairs such as full repair costs, the overall condition of the equipment, age and whether a repair will extend its lifespan. We normally don't recommend to proceed with repair if the total costs are more than 50% of the price of a new one as a new product will come with the full manufacturer's warranty for the entire product which is normally 2-4 years depending on the product.

Is it better simply to replace my faulty pool equipment with the same brand and model unit?

Very often it can be a good solution especially as it should not require any changes to your your pool plumbing, however its is important to consider if you were happy with the performance of your pool equipment, if it was the best size and capacity for your pool, how long it lasted for you.
